 Azerbaijan discloses number of cultural, historical monuments registered in its liberated territories

As many as 705 cultural and historical monuments are registered in Azerbaijan’s Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur regions, Deputy Minister of Culture Saadat Yusifova said on Monday.  

As a result of the analysis it was established that in these territories there are numerous objects of cultural heritage of historical, archaeological and architectural significance that have not passed state registration, she said while speaking at the first-ever Cultural Heritage Forum in Baku, AzVision.az reports.

“During the occupation, they were subjected to targeted destruction and vandalism; 47 monuments were razed to the ground. In 2020-2022, the State Service for the Protection, Restoration and Development of Cultural Heritage inspected 433 historical and cultural monuments. In addition, monitoring was carried out on 182 historical, architectural, archaeological monuments located in these territories that do not have state registration,” Yusifova said.

The deputy minister added that the number of monuments protected at the state level in Azerbaijan exceeds 6,000.

“Currently in our country, there are 6,308 monuments under state protection, more than 1,400 cultural and historical sites are registered as recently discovered monuments. Currently, there are 26 cultural and historical reserves, four of which are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List,” she said.
