Azerbaijan plans to create green energy zone in its liberated territories: Minister

Azerbaijan plans to create a green energy zone in its liberated territories, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan and President of COP29 Mukhtar Babayev said, AzVision.az reports.

Babayev made the remarks at today's 3rd International Conference on Humanitarian Demining on the topic “Mitigating Environmental Impact of Landmines - Resource Mobilization for Safe and Green Future” in Zangilan.

"Following the COP29 goals, Azerbaijan aims to ensure climate resilience in its demining and reconstruction efforts. Our goal is to create a green energy zone in the liberated territories. By restoring ecosystems and reintroducing sustainable practices, we aim to turn these lands into green zones. We are utilizing innovative technologies and approaches, such as 'smart cities' and 'smart villages', to ensure minimal emissions," he explained.

The minister added that for nearly three decades, the occupation of Azerbaijan's territories left a destructive legacy of landmines and unexploded ordnance, turning fertile, biodiverse landscapes into dead zones.

He emphasized that these hidden threats not only endanger human lives but also hinder sustainable development.

To note, the 3rd International Humanitarian Demining Conference is attended by over 300 delegates from 75 countries.

The participants include high-ranking officials from various countries, senior UN headquarters staff, representatives of reputable international organizations and demining centers from different countries, as well as officials from accredited diplomatic missions in Azerbaijan.
