Armenian PM Pashinyan calls inappropriate to hold EU membership referendum

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that he doesn't consider it advisable to hold a referendum to join the EU, AzVision.az reports citing Armenian media.

He made the remark during the Armenian Democracy Forum.

At the same time, he noted that the people of Armenia have European aspirations, which he himself stated from the rostrum of the European Parliament. According to Pashinyan, he, as an official who is authorized to represent the people of Armenia, knows their opinion.

“Should we hold a referendum now or not?.. If we put this issue to a referendum, we will have to carry out a propaganda campaign. When we hold it, people will ask questions - when, how, in what time frame, in what steps? Does the European Union want this or not?, is the European Union ready? Can I give answers to these questions - no,” the prime minister said.

He also drew attention to the processes taking place in the European Union itself. For example, the elections held in the EU raise certain questions, he added.
