COP29 Lead Negotiator: COPs are most inclusive UN events

Yalchin Rafiyev, the Lead Negotiator for COP29, emphasized that COPs are among the most inclusive events within the United Nations framework.

Rafiyev made this statement during a media seminar on effective communication strategies for COP29, held as part of the "29 Climate Conversations: Road to COP29" event, AzVision.az reports.

He noted that the main expectation from COP29, set to take place in Baku this year, is to define the collective societal goal. "In 2009, during the COP in Copenhagen, a decision was made that developed countries should provide $100 billion in annual aid to developing countries to combat climate change, in the form of grants and interest-free assistance," he explained.

The Lead Negotiator stressed that the primary objective of COP29 in Baku is to determine the upper limit of this $100 billion aid. "Years have passed, the global economy has changed, demands and needs have increased, and countries' requirements have evolved accordingly," Rafiyev noted.

He added that a decision must be made at COP29 in Baku regarding the amount of assistance developed countries should provide to developing nations in the future. "We have been working with countries worldwide since the beginning of the year in this direction. Preparations for the negotiation process are currently underway, and there is clarity in positions. We are working on a strategy to bring this to a common point and reach a consensus," the Lead Negotiator emphasized.
