Pakistan to present climate actions and solutions at COP29 in Azerbaijan

Romina Khurshid Alam, Pakistan’s Prime Minister's Coordinator on Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, has emphasized the significance of COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, as a key platform for Pakistan to present its climate initiatives, challenges, and solutions, AzVision.az reports.

Addressing a meeting of development partners in Islamabad, she stressed the need for collaboration in achieving climate diplomacy goals, promoting gender equality, and advancing smart agriculture through private sector involvement.

Romina Khurshid Alam underscored the urgency of addressing climate change in Pakistan, highlighting its status as one of the most vulnerable countries globally. She called for input from development partners to enhance Pakistan's participation in COP29, with a focus on securing increased climate finance for adaptation projects.

She pointed out that despite contributing less than 1% to global carbon emissions, Pakistan faces severe consequences from climate disasters, including floods and droughts that have devastated infrastructure and livelihoods. The floods in 2022 in Pakistan alone caused over 24 billion rupees (PKR) in damages.

Prime Minister's Aide said that she is actively seeking collaboration with Business 20 (B20) countries to develop regional solutions for climate and environmental challenges.

Development partners from various international institutions also shared their ideas and initiatives to make Pakistan's participation in COP29 more effective. Representatives from international institutions, diplomatic missions, and officials of the climate change ministry were present at the meeting.

COP29 will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22, 2024.
