The University of Cambridge hosted a panel discussion on the scientific and practical aspects of the upcoming 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, scheduled to take place in Azerbaijan this November.

The event, moderated by Siddharth (Montu) Saxena, a board member of the Scientific Council of the COP29 Presidency, included a video presentation highlighting preparations for COP29.

In his remarks, Siddharth Saxena touched upon the long-standing scientific and practical cooperation between Azerbaijan and the University of Cambridge, expressing confidence in the country’s successful hosting of COP29.

Addressing the event, Elin Suleymanov, Azerbaijani Ambassador to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, stressed the importance of October 18, Day of Restoration of Independence in Azerbaijan. He described the hosting of COP29 as a testament to Azerbaijan’s growth as a regional leader and an independent state over the last 33 years.

Suleymanov shared details on COP29’s focus, including climate finance targets, carbon market regulation, and aid to small island developing states vulnerable to climate change.

He also highlighted joint projects with the Commonwealth and initiatives from the COP29 Presidency, including the COP Truce initiative.

University professors Sian Dutton, Akshay Rao, Prajakti Karla, and Nicholas Ray also spoke at the event, which concluded with a Q&A session.
