Azerbaijani Ambassador presents report on COP29 in Mexico

Azerbaijan's Ambassador to Mexico Mammad Talibov has presented a report on COP29 in Azerbaijan at an event organized by the National Union of Engineering Associations (Unidad Nacional de Asociaciones de Ingenieros), AzVision.az reports citing the embassy.

At the event, which was also attended by Alicia Barcena, secretary of Environment and Natural Resources of Mexico, the ambassador noted with satisfaction that Azerbaijan was unanimously elected to host the 29th session of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference (COP29).

This demonstrates the country's growing role in the international arena and Baku's leadership in fighting climate change at national, regional, and global levels. The diplomat emphasized that Azerbaijan has made green development one of its main priorities, with the current year declared as the Green World Solidarity Year.

The country is now a regional leader in transitioning to green energy, with recent years focusing on green projects domestically. Significant work is being done to create smart cities and villages in liberated territories, with Karabakh and East Zangazur economic zones, as well as the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, set to become zero-emission zones by 2050.

By 2030, renewable energy sources will constitute at least 30% of the country's total energy balance. He also highlighted the relevance and importance of climate change, noting that it knows no borders and affects all countries. The need for international cooperation to effectively address this global issue was emphasized. Discussing Azerbaijan's initiatives as COP29 chair, the ambassador emphasized that the main goal is to promote climate action, encourage active stakeholder participation, and raise ambitions in fighting climate change.

He called on both governmental and non-governmental organizations to join these global initiatives launched by the COP29 presidency. Barcena spoke about the Mexican government's work on climate change issues and expectations for COP29.
