Train strike held across Italy after rail worker attacked

An eight-hour strike on Tuesday of Trenitalia, Trenitalia Tper, Fs Security, Italo Ntv and Trenord railway workers was held across Italy after a train manager working on a regional train was stabbed near the Liguria station of Rivarolo, Italian media reported.

The protest, which started at 9 and will end at 17, led to cancellations and delays of up to three hours in Rome, as well as in Florence and Naples, among other cities, with only 30% of services guaranteed.

The 44-year-old conductor who was working on a regional train connecting Genoa to Busalla was attacked by a 21-year-old Egyptian citizen when he asked him and another passenger for their train tickets The man was taken to Genoa's Villa Scassi Hospital in serious but not life-threatening condition.

The strike was organized to demand more security on the job after "a long series of attacks" over the past few months against railway personnel by labour unions Filt Cgil, Fit Cisl, Uiltrasporti, Ugl Ferrovieri, Fast Confsal and Orsa Trasporti.
