He noted that nuclear energy plays an important role in the global energy transition, as it is a clean, stable, and long-term energy source due to its high efficiency, production of large amounts of electricity with minimal resources, and low greenhouse emissions.
The minister noted the importance of the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) global efforts for safe, peaceful, and sustainable use of nuclear energy, as well as the Atoms4NetZero initiative aimed at increasing the role of this type of energy along with renewables in the global energy transition. Shahbazov also noted Azerbaijan's contribution to the large-scale green energy transition through the creation of green energy corridors from the Caspian Sea and Central Asia to Europe.
The minister said that Azerbaijan's COP29 presidency priorities, confirming the country's commitment to becoming a green growth country, green energy initiatives, and the commitment to update national goals within the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), highlight the importance of using all clean energy sources: "In this regard, we believe that nuclear energy, including small modular reactors, can become one of the elements supporting energy transition in our long-term energy strategy. Azerbaijan is ready to cooperate with the IAEA to implement new technologies in the energy sector, remaining faithful to its international obligations and mastering best practices."
He noted that the program for Azerbaijan, planned for 2024-2029, will make an important contribution to developing the country's cooperation with the IAEA in nuclear technologies and energy.
The minister emphasized that Azerbaijan is committed to the peaceful use of nuclear energy and after COP28 and the Nuclear Energy Summit will pay special attention to ensuring that COP29 also becomes a platform highlighting and promoting the importance of nuclear energy in fighting climate change.
