Inclusivity, justice, and coordination key principles for climate cooperation: Azerbaijani minister

An inclusive approach and justice are crucial in international efforts to combat climate change, Azerbaijan's Minister of Economy Mikayil Jabbarov said during a high-level session with the World Economic Forum "The Power of Cooperation: Joining Forces to Achieve Zero Emissions" within COP29, AzVision.az reports.

The minister noted that existing methods and principles have not yet yielded expected results and proposed discussing important aspects such as inclusivity, justice, and coordination.

According to Jabbarov, inclusivity plays a central role in the process. He indicated that Azerbaijan views climate efforts as a topic that transcends political divisions and emphasized that an inclusive approach will achieve more effective results. The minister noted that in his conference speech, Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev addressed this important topic, hinting at the need to overcome disagreements for common goals.

He specifically focused on the principle of justice, stressing the importance to take into account that each nation is in unique conditions, and a fair approach is the only way for effective coordination of actions.

Equally important, in his opinion, is the urgency of coordination: The timeframe for achieving climate goals is narrowing, and effective process management requires coordinated and harmonized political decisions, the minister said.

According to the minister, one of the first early achievements in the initial days of COP29 was the agreement on Article 6.4 regarding carbon markets' functioning, which had remained unresolved for over a decade. Jabbarov also welcomed the joint statement from major multilateral development banks announcing new ambitious goals, which he called an important and positive step.
