Elections in Karabakh are mockery of democratic norms
Parliamentary faction "For Better Hungary" made this week an official statement in which it called Nagorno-Karabakh "Armenian-occupied part of the Republic of Azerbaijan".

The statement said that "the only acceptable solution to the conflict is to restore the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan by the immediate withdrawal of the occupation forces of Armenia in accordance with the requirements of the four UN Security Council resolutions".

"The faction does not recognize the legitimacy of the current so-called `local authorities` in Nagorno-Karabakh `because of the expulsion of the Azerbaijani population from their homes by the indigenous Armenian occupying forces and depriving them of the opportunity to participate in the formation of legal authorities," the statement said.

The MPs said that they firmly came up with such a statement in the middle of 2013, when they initiated a Memorandum of twinning between the illegally occupied Azerbaijani town of Shusha and Agdam respectively with Hungarian cities Dendesh and Tissavasharvari. The MOU was signed by the exile constitutional authorities of the two Azerbaijani cities . Thus, party "For a Better Hungary " formally considers Bayram Safarov and Nizami Sadikhov de jure mayors, respectively, of Shusha and Agdam.

In the statement, the faction also emphasized that "elections in Nagorno-Karabakh can be considered legitimate, fair and democratic only after Armenia ceases to violate international law and withdraw its occupation forces from Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan`s territorial integrity is restored, displaced people return to their native land and are able to exercise their democratic rights of voters. Until then, until this happens, any "elections " held by the Armenian authorities in the territory occupied by them, in Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan, will be considered a cynical mockery of democratic norms and values".

The statement was voiced by MP Marton Dendeshi, responsible for external relations of the faction.

Earlier, the faction recognized Khojaly massacre as genocide.
