Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov met with Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari as part of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly.
Noting the official visits’ positive impact on the development of relations, the Iraqi FM underlined the importance of high-level mutual visits between the two countries.
Touching upon the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, Ibrahim al-Jaafari said that Iraq supports the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
There are ample opportunities for the development of relations between the two countries, the FM said, noting that Iraq is interested in expanding cooperation with Azerbaijan in the fight against terrorism.
Minister Mammadyarov, recalling the historically friendly relations between the peoples of Azerbaijan and Iraq, said that the launch of direct flights between Baku and Baghdad will make a significant contribution to cooperation between the two countries.
Mammadyarov praised the support provided by Iraq to Azerbaijan`s territorial integrity and sovereignty within various international organizations, including in the framework of the UN General Assembly.
Noting the opportunities for cooperation between the two countries, Mammadyarov stressed the importance of mutual visits between business circles of both countries and joint business forums for development of economic and trade relations.
The minister added that Azerbaijan is particularly interested in cooperation with Iraq in the energy sector.
Mammadyarov invited his Iraqi counterpart to visit Azerbaijan, and the Iraqi minister gladly accepted the invitation.
