South Korea declares 7-day national mourning following Jeju Air crash

South Korea has entered a period of national mourning following the tragic crash of a Jeju Air passenger plane today, which resulted in the deaths of at least 177 people, AzVision.az reports, citing Dimsum Daily.

The aircraft, carrying 181 individuals, was attempting to land at Muan Airport after departing from Bangkok when it veered off the runway and collided with a wall. Initial reports indicated that two crew members survived, but the toll has since risen dramatically.

Acting President Choi Sang-mok announced that the nation would observe a seven-day mourning period starting from December 29, extending until midnight on 4th January. This decision reflects the profound grief felt across the country as families await news of their loved ones.

In a show of solidarity, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his condolences to the South Korean government, extending heartfelt sympathies to the victims’ families and wishing for the swift recovery of the injured.

The ill-fated flight, identified as 7C2216, is believed to have suffered a bird strike, leading to a failure in its landing gear. The resulting crash was catastrophic, with many victims reportedly ejected from the aircraft upon impact. In light of the disaster, authorities have suspended all flights to and from Muan Airport.

Former President Yoon Suk Yeol also paid tribute to the victims on social media, voicing his solidarity with the bereaved families and the nation as a whole during this difficult time.
