S. Korea dismisses 4 military commanders over martial law declaration

South Korean authorities on Monday dismissed at least four senior military commanders from their positions over last month's short-lived martial law decree by impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, Yonhap news reported.

Lt. Gen. Yeo In-hyung, head of the Defense Counterintelligence Command; Maj. Gen. Moon Sang-ho, head of the Defense Intelligence Command; Lt. Gen. Lee Jin-woo, head of the Capital Defense Command; and Lt. Gen. Kwak Jong-keun, chief of the Army Special Warfare Command, were dismissed from their positions, according to Defense Ministry.

They are suspected of taking part in martial law operations on Dec. 3, 2024 and the decision was taken in view of the ongoing legal review of possible disciplinary measures for Army Chief of Staff Gen. Park An-su, who served as the martial law commander.

Authorities are expected to officially notify the four commanders of the decision on Tuesday, when it takes effect.

Earlier, South Korean police raided the presidential office Monday to secure documents related to Yoon’s declaration of martial law.

The impeached president, meanwhile, was moved to a solitary cell at the Seoul Detention Center after his formal arrest.

Yoon was transferred to the 12-square-meter cell at the detention center in Uiwang, south of Seoul, on Sunday after the Seoul Western District Court issued a warrant for his formal arrest, according to Shin Yong-hae, commissioner general of the Korea Correctional Service.

His cell, which is known to usually hold five or six people, is similar in size to those where past presidents have been detained, Shin told lawmakers.

Yoon is the country's first sitting president to be formally arrested after a Seoul court issued a warrant Sunday to detain him for an extended period over his botched martial law bid last month.
