Chinese ChatGPT alternative tops some mobile app rankings

DeepSeek, a smart assistant from the Chinese company of the same name, is leading app rankings in the AppStore across several countries, including China, the United States, UK, and United Arab Emirates.

DeepSeek began releasing its AI-based products in 2023, but only recently gained public attention after releasing a new R1 version on January 20, which is claimed to surpass its competitor ChatGPT from American OpenAI, AzVision.az reports, citing TASS.

The new version has allowed the DeepSeek app to top AppStore rankings in almost all English-speaking countries. It's also among the top five most popular apps in several other countries, including Germany, Saudi Arabia, France, Türkiye, Netherlands, and Japan.

The DeepSeek chatbot sparked discussions in Western social media following its new version release. Users note that it performs tasks as well as the latest version of ChatGPT while remaining completely free. American investor Marc Andreessen, whose venture fund manages assets worth over $40 billion, called DeepSeek-R1 "the most amazing and impressive breakthrough" in his professional career. According to media reports, the Chinese company may have spent 90% less on developing its chatbot compared to OpenAI.
