Azerbaijan commences first cargo transit from Zira Port

Azerbaijan Railways CJSC (ADY) has commenced transporting transit cargo by rail from Zira Port for the first time, AzVision.az reports, citing ADY.

As part of the infrastructure development carried out by ADY in 2023-2024, the Dubandi-Zira-Gurgan-Zira Sea Port railway line (21 km) has been reconstructed, and a new 9 km railway line has been built between Gurgan and Zira Port.

This infrastructure development has enabled the initiation of transit cargo transportation by rail from Zira Port. In the initial phase, approximately 13,000 tons of sulfur cargo from Central Asia will be transported by train to Europe. It is planned to transport 60,000 tons of cargo per month by rail from Zira Port.

The next phase envisions diversifying the types of cargo, including the transportation of urea. This development will ensure faster organization of cargo flows along the Middle Corridor and improve operational efficiency.

Along with effectively organizing transit transportation, ADY is actively working to develop and enhance the competitiveness of corridors passing through Azerbaijan. The Middle Corridor is a strategically important transit route for Azerbaijan, facilitating cargo transportation from East to West and vice versa. Azerbaijan is the primary initiator of diversifying this corridor and forming alternative branches.
