Orban: Hungary will not let foreign agents meddle in internal affairs

The Hungarian government will not tolerate foreign financial support for political purposes in the country and will take measures against those who may dare violate this rule - who are, in fact, foreign agents, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said, AzVision.az reports, citing TASS.

He was commenting on the Trump administration’s decision to suspend the work of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), through which foreign aid programs were financed. As Orban emphasized, along with the money from private foundations, these funds often went for political purposes, including support for the opposition and the removal of unfavorable governments in other countries.

"Trump has caused a tornado and brought a cleansing wind of change," he said. Now some secrets are being revealed as to who and what the US gave money to and for what purposes.

"Skeletons are emerging from the closet of the previous Democratic administration [Joe Biden] in such amounts that it is no longer possible to walk freely without stumbling. Liberal elites around the world sought to achieve their aims at the expense of the Americans and to use foreign aid, which was in fact a political tool, to do so," Orban said.

He believes this was the case in a number of Central European countries, including Serbia, Slovakia, and Hungary, where some NGOs and media outlets were funded from abroad, supported opposition politicians, and tried to discredit the current government.

"In America, they would be called foreign agents because they are not serving their own country but accepting money from another state," the Hungarian prime minister explained. He clarified that he did not really like this term, but in any case, "these are people and organizations that are paid from abroad and their job is to overthrow the Hungarian government."

In his opinion, such practices threaten national sovereignty and should be stopped in Hungary. "All instances of funds coming from America must be made public and those who receive them will face legal consequences. No money coming from abroad can be used to influence Hungarian politics. This will be ensured in accordance with the law," Orban assured.

Hungary has had a law in place since December 2023 that makes foreign funding of political parties a crime and punishes it with up to three years in prison. The National Sovereignty Protection Office is tasked with monitoring the ban and collecting information on possible violators.
