Pope Francis suffered two episodes of respiratory insufficiency: Vatican

Pope Francis, who was diagnosed with double pneumonia, suffered two episodes of "acute respiratory insufficiency" and required non-invasive mechanical ventilation, the press service of the Holy See said, AzVision.az reports, citing TASS.

"Today, the Holy Father suffered two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency, caused by a significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus and consequent bronchospasm. Two bronchoscopies were therefore performed, with the need to remove large secretions," it said. "In the afternoon, non-invasive mechanical ventilation was resumed. The Holy Father remained alert, oriented and cooperative at all times. The prognosis remains guarded."

Vatican sources said earlier that the pontiff was "eating normally" and even drinks coffee for breakfast. He has already suffered two episodes of respiratory insufficiency and required non-invasive ventilation.

The 88-year-old pontiff has been receiving treatment at Rome’s Gemelli hospital since February 14 after being diagnosed with double pneumonia.
