Orthodox Christians of Azerbaijan celebrate Christmas
The Orthodox community of Azerbaijan together with the entire Orthodox world celebrated one of the main Christian holidays – Christmas on 7 January.

Bishop of Baku and Azerbaijan Alexander made celebratory Christmas service at the Cathedral of the Holy Myrrh -Bearers in Baku, where hundreds of believers gathered on Tuesday night.

Christmas is one of the most important holidays for the faithful who consider blessed Savior`s birth day to be the birthday of their religion. A new era begins from this day. People should make up with each other and do good things on this day.

Christmas is preceded by the Christmas Eve - the last day of strict fasting . During it, it is allowed to eat only sochivo - soaked and sodden wheat or rice, and beans, peas and vegetables .

The other day the Christian community of Azerbaijan was congratulated by President Ilham Aliyev .

"Celebration of Christmas in Azerbaijan every year embodies renewal, tranquility, solidarity, a sense of compassion and mercy. Let this holiday bring happiness to your families, abundance to your houses and prosperity into your life “, the president said.

The faithful of the Serbian and Georgian and Jerusalem churches, who also live in the Julian calendar also celebrate Christmas on 7 January. Roman Catholic and most Protestant churches celebrate the holiday on December 25, according to modern Gregorian calendar.
