Myanmar earthquake death toll exceeds 2,700

The death toll from Myanmar’s devastating earthquake has exceeded 2,700, China Central Television reported, citing data collected at the site of search and rescue operations, according to TASS.

As many as 2,719 bodies have been recovered so far.

Beijing’s Ambassador to Naypyidaw Ma Jia confirmed earlier that at least three Chinese nationals had been killed in the quake and another 14 had suffered injuries.

Chinese President Xi Jinping stated that Beijing was ready to assist the residents of the earthquake-stricken areas in Myanmar in dealing with the aftermath of the disaster and rebuilding their homes. China has pledged to provide 100 million yuan (some $13.8 mln) worth of humanitarian aid to the neighboring country.

A powerful earthquake hit Myanmar on March 28. Many countries, including Russia and China, as well as the World Health Organization, have sent personnel and resources to the country to help address the consequences of the quake.
