  EU Commissioner hails Azerbaijan

EU Commissioner for Energy and Housing, Dan Jørgensen, underscored the pivotal role of Azerbaijan in diversifying the European Union's energy supply and reducing reliance on Russian gas, particularly within the framework of the Southern Gas Corridor.

His remarks came during the 11th 11th Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council Ministerial Meeting and the 3rd Green Energy Advisory Council Ministerial Meeting, AzVision.az reports, citing Caliber.az.

Jørgensen highlighted the increasing importance of gas piped from Azerbaijan in supporting the EU's energy transition, specifically its shift towards achieving zero emissions in the coming years. He expressed optimism that this collaboration would further enhance trade cooperation between Azerbaijan and the EU, contributing to the Union's long-term energy security goals.

In his address, Jørgensen outlined several key objectives moving forward, including strengthening the operations of the Southern Gas Corridor, improving the gas sector, bolstering energy security, and developing the EU's electricity grid. However, he emphasized that the focus of the EU's energy strategy extends beyond immediate crisis management to establishing strategic pathways for the future.

A core aspect of this future strategy is the development of a "green energy corridor" connecting the South Caucasus to the European Union, which Jørgensen described as a priority for both parties. He stressed the importance of integrating various innovative ideas, technologies, and routes in order to ensure the effective functioning of this corridor.

"The potential and spirit of cooperation between the two sides are immense, and both Azerbaijan and the EU are highly motivated to drive this initiative forward," Jørgensen concluded, emphasizing the mutual interest in advancing green energy solutions.
