PKK decision to dissolve, lay down arms key step toward ‘terror-free Türkiye’ - ruling party

The terror group PKK's decision to dissolve and lay down arms after a call made by the convicted PKK leader in Imrali prison is a key step toward a “terror-free Türkiye,” the country's ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party spokesman Omer Celik said Monday, AzVision.az reports, citing Anadolu Agency.

“The decision of the PKK to dissolve itself and lay down its arms following the call from Imrali is an important step towards the goal of 'terror-free Türkiye',” the spokesman said.

“If the new PKK decision is fully implemented, shutting down all PKK branches, illegal structures, it will be a turning point,” he added.

Celik stated that the “terror-free Türkiye” process will be closely monitored on the ground by state institutions, and all developments will be reported to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

He said Erdogan’s strong political will and comprehensive approach, outlined as a "state policy," along with the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahceli’s "historic call and guiding stance," have been crucial in strengthening the domestic front.

Celik emphasized that the effective and productive dialogue between political parties, along with consultation and communication, has enabled democratic politics to take responsibility and initiative as a “legitimate address.”

He stressed that the terrorist group’s decision must be implemented in all its aspects, both internally and externally, and in a concrete manner.

“In this way, a positive momentum will emerge to block the imperialist plans that use terrorist organizations in our region as proxies for war.

"Furthermore, the concrete realization of a ‘Terror-Free Türkiye’ will allow all political channels in Türkiye to operate more effectively at a time when politics all over the world is drowning in depoliticization," he noted.

Celik continued: "It will further strengthen our democracy, political life, and national unity. It will ensure that political dialogue channels, especially within the Turkish parliament, function at their strongest. The awareness that our Republic is the roof over us all, and that our democracy is the fundamental ground for solving all problems, will become even stronger and take deeper root.”

Underlining that the future will continue to be shaped on the most legitimate and solid foundations "through a sense of shared history, fate, and citizenship," the spokesman stated that every positive step taken will pave the way for another.

“We must achieve a ‘terror-free Türkiye’ on the ground with all its dimensions, goals, and without exception. Achieving this means that all our citizens, regardless of cultural, ethnic, or sectarian background, will be winners. All citizens will be the winners,” Celik said.

“Our core principle is this: Even if our names differ, our common surname is the Republic of Türkiye. There is no debate about the qualities of our state and the values of our nation, and there is no step and can be no step that would undermine these values.

"One of the major strategic steps that will embrace the Century of Türkiye, as declared by our president, will be 'terror-free Türkiye.' Our nation can rest assured that the Republic of Türkiye is in control of its agenda," he added.

Jailed PKK ringleader Abdullah Ocalan in February called for the dissolution of the PKK and all groups under it, urging an end to its terror campaign spanning over 40 years.

In its 40-year terror campaign against Türkiye, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the US, and the European Union – has been responsible for the deaths of more than 40,000 people, including women, children and infants. The YPG/PYD is the PKK’s Syrian offshoot.
