President Ilham Aliyev’s Budapest visit gains wide coverage in Hungary

Hungarian media have been giving extensive coverage to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s visit to Hungary, where he took part in the Informal Summit of the Heads of State of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS).

One article highlighted Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s video message shared on social media, in which he said, “The President of Azerbaijan is working for peace—just like Hungary.”

The coverage underscores the growing significance of the Organization of Turkic States in Central Asian and Eurasian political and economic relations. Commentators emphasized that President Aliyev’s visit to Budapest reflects Azerbaijan’s active role within the OTS.

Orbán’s video message, posted across multiple platforms, stated, “Hungary supports all those who work for peace, including our ally Azerbaijan.”

The news portal Index.hu recalled Orbán’s remarks on energy cooperation, noting that without the Turkic states, Hungarian families would pay two to three times more for energy. Orbán mentioned that the first shipment of natural gas from Azerbaijan arrived last year.

The article quoted Orbán saying, “Despite the challenges Hungary has faced over recent decades, it has always been able to rely on Azerbaijan.” Index.hu also reported that President Aliyev praised the strong and friendly relations between Hungary and Azerbaijan, providing detailed coverage of his remarks.

The article noted that Hungarian energy companies have acquired shares in Azerbaijani oil and gas fields, enabling the annual export of millions of cubic meters of natural gas and hundreds of thousands of barrels of oil to global markets.

Nepszava published an article titled “Viktor Orbán: Without Our Turkic Friends, There Would Be No Price Reduction. Azerbaijan Can Always Be Counted On.” The outlet quoted Orbán reaffirming Azerbaijan’s reliability as a partner.

Mandiner also cited Orbán’s statement: “Without our Turkic friends, Hungary would not have been able to lower its energy costs.”

EurazsiaMagazin.hu emphasized that cooperation with the Turkic states is critical, especially as the European Union pushes to cut traditional energy routes through Brussels. The article claimed that Brussels aims to disrupt Hungary’s energy supply, which would increase utility bills for Hungarian families.

The same article reported that Prime Minister Orbán congratulated President Aliyev on progress in the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace treaty and praised Azerbaijan for enabling Hungarian investments in oil and gas fields and pipelines.

Meanwhile, the analytical site Demokrata noted that Baku and Budapest agreed to expand cooperation in renewable energy.
