COP29 Presidency welcomes proposal to set up regional training centers as partnership platforms

International efforts to contain global warming are beginning to show tangible results. Before the Paris Agreement, the world was on track to heat nearly 4 degrees Celsius. Today, projections suggest that warming could be limited to below 3 degrees and the experts attribute this shift to global climate agreements and the implementation of concrete mitigation measures, said Mukhtar Babayev, the Representative of the President of Azerbaijan for Climate Issues, COP29 President, as he addressed the session on “Glacier Projections and Emissions: How much can 1.5°C Pathways Save?” held as part of the first “High-level International Conference on Glaciers’ Preservation” in the capital of city of Dushanbe, Tajikistan.

In his remarks, Mukhtar Babayev highlighted the key outcomes of Azerbaijan’s COP29 Presidency - the adoption of the "Baku Finance Goal", which sets a new target of mobilizing at least $1.3 trillion per year in climate finance for developing countries by 2035, as well as the decision to ensure the full operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund.

Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev underscored that national climate strategies for emissions reduction and climate adaptation could help foster deeper regional partnerships. “They can demonstrate how collaboration and the setting of priorities can guide our efforts,” Babayev said. “This includes monitoring shared and regional glaciers and forecasting their response to future climate changes. The COP29 Presidency welcomes the proposal to establish regional training centers, describing them as valuable platforms for partnership,” he added.
