Kocharyan deems new constitutional amendments as `fatal mistake`
The second President of Armenia, Robert Kocharyan, spoke with 2rd.am, and expressed his views on the proposed draft constitutional amendments.
Kocharyan noted that his respective position has not changed, and there is no need for any constitutional amendments in the country.

He added that all the problems and challenges the country faces can be fully addressed within the framework of the current Constitution.

The ex-president said the publicized draft surpassed his worst expectations. As per Kocharyan, the new draft Constitution contains substantial risks that will roll Armenia toward a de facto one-party system.

In his view, the draft Constitution seems to have the objective of concealing the absolutely unacceptable form of the formation of the National Assembly (NA), and it deprives the content of the real essence of parliamentary governance.

According to Robert Kocharyan, the proposed draft actually turns political monopoly into a constitutional norm.

In closing, the second president stressed that he is definitely against these constitutional amendments, and a huge mistake is being made, whose consequences are extremely perilous for Armenia.

The NA on Monday voted on and passed the decision on agreeing to hold a referendum on the draft amendments to the Constitution.

Pursuant to the new draft Constitution, Armenia will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance.
