NATO opens new headquarters near Russian border

NATO has officially opened a new regional headquarters for its land command in Mikkeli, Finland, effective September 1.

The city of Mikkeli is strategically located just 140 kilometers (about 87 miles) from the Russian border and 304 kilometers (about 189 miles) from St. Petersburg.

According to Finland's Ministry of Defense, the headquarters will initially be staffed by around 10 specialists. The plan is to increase the number of personnel to 50 in the coming years. The command staff is comprised of representatives from various NATO member countries, including Finland.
