In a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Russian President Vladimir Putin publicly thanked North Korean soldiers for their "brave and heroic" role in helping to "liberate" the Kursk region from a Ukrainian incursion, AzVision.az reports citing the Russian media.

The remarks, reported by Russian state media Tass, highlight the growing military cooperation between the two nations and confirm North Korea's direct military involvement in the conflict in Ukraine.

Kim, in turn, described his country's support for Russia as a "fraternal duty" and stated that bilateral cooperation has been significantly strengthened under the June 2024 treaty. This landmark agreement includes a mutual defense clause, which Kim previously hailed as the "strongest ever" alliance between the two countries. The two leaders pledged to further strengthen their cooperation in various areas.

Putin's comments frame the military assistance as part of the fight against "neo-Nazism," a term Russia has used to justify its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The meeting between the two leaders underscores a deepening alliance, built on a shared stance against what they perceive as Western "aggression," and one that has been formalized by their recent treaty.
