The quake struck at 4.56 am, with a depth of 25.4 kilometers (15.7 miles), 45 km (27.9 miles) west-northwest of Sinabang town on the east coast of Simeulue Island.
Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency said on US social media company X that the earthquake was measured at 6.3 on the Richter scale.
No tsunami alert was issued after the quake.
There were no reports of damage or casualties when this report was published.
At least 32 people were confirmed dead due to landslides and floods in Sumatra, according to Kompas TV on Thursday.
