President Trump: "We're going to have a presence in Venezuela."
In a series of dramatic statements following the overnight capture of Nicolás Maduro, President Trump has laid out a bold and controversial new vision for American involvement in South America’s energy sector.
"We’re going to have a presence in Venezuela as it pertains to oil," the President told reporters during a press conference at Mar-a-Lago today, January 3, 2026. "We’re going to be taking out a tremendous amount of wealth out of the ground… It goes also to the U.S. in the form of reimbursement for the damages caused us by that country."
