Monsignor Rev. Lucio Angel Vallejo Balda is a Vatican employee, while Francesca Chaouqui worked on a commission set up by Pope Francis in 2013. The commission was part of Pope Francis’s attempts to reform the Holy See’s finances.
Chaouqui, who reportedly cooperated with the investigation, was released, while Vallejo Balda remained jailed in Vatican City.
Calls to the Vatican spokesperson were not immediately answered.
Italian media recently reported that the Vatican’s police agency had started a probe into who tampered with the computer of a top Vatican prelate. The Vatican refused to say whether Monday’s arrests were related to this investigation, the Associated Press reported.
In 2013, the Vatican made it a crime to leak confidential information after two people were arrested for leaking Pope Benedict XVI’s confidential documents in 2012.
