Incoming Socialist prime minister Antonio Costa’s first call is to end years of austerity.
“The reforms that we need to undergo are of another sort,” Costa said “These demand persistence and continuity in investment, in innovation and knowledge, in the modernisation of our companies and public administration, in valuing our land and resources, in health promotion, cohesion reinforcement and in fighting inequality.”
The country’s president warned the new Socialist administration he will use all his powers to guarantee it does not veer off the path of budget consolidation agreed with the European Union.
Costa said his government will guarantee Portugal’s commitments but he will pursue a healthier path of budget consolidation.
