Co-op between Georgia, Turkey discussed within NATO
Foreign Minister of Georgia Giorgi Kvirikashvili discussed bilateral strategic cooperation with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu within the framework of the NATO Foreign Ministers` meeting, the press service of the Georgian foreign ministry said, Sputnik international news agency reported.
The Georgian foreign minister participates in the NATO Foreign Ministers` meeting in Brussels, Belgium, December 1-2.

“The ministers reaffirmed the strategic partnership and close cooperation between the two countries, including in the international energy and transit projects,” said the message. “They also discussed the importance of the Baku-Tbilisi–Kars project.”

Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway is being constructed on the basis of a Georgian-Azerbaijani-Turkish intergovernmental agreement.

A new 105-kilometer branch of the railroad is being constructed as part of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars project. In addition, the railway`s Akhalkalaki-Marabda-Tbilisi section is under reconstruction in Georgia that will increase its capacity to 15 million metric tons of cargo per year. A depot is under construction in Akhalkalaki for the transition of trains from the existing tracks in Georgia to the European ones.

The peak capacity of the corridor will be 17 million metric tons of cargo per year. At the initial stage, this figure will be equal to one million passengers and 6.5 million metric tons of cargo.

Turkish foreign minister expressed to assist Georgia in the European and Euro-Atlantic integration, according to the message.

Institutional cooperation between Georgia and NATO began in 1994, when the country became a member of the Partnership for Peace program.

In addition, the sides discussed issues of regional security, as well as the positive dynamics of cooperation within the framework of the trilateral format with Azerbaijan.

“After the meeting, the Georgian foreign minister invited his Turkish counterpart to Georgia to participate in the trilateral meeting,” the foreign ministry said.
