Caspian ecology not affected by Gunashli offshore platform fire - ANAS
The fire that broke out on an offshore platform at SOCAR’s Gunashli field has had no negative effect on the ecological state of the Caspian Sea because the oil-gas condensate therein is burning up so the sea is not being polluted, director of the Institute of Geography of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) Ramiz Mammadov told on Dec.15.

He outlined, however, that in case the fire is extinguished, a fountain may spring out and have some negative effects on the sea.

“Nevertheless, there are ships awaiting there to prevent any such accident. The ships have laid special containment booms on the water to prevent possible oil spill,” he said.

Note that, SOCAR released information that satellite pictures of the offshore field and its surrounding have revealed there are no oil spots in the area.

The fire that occurred on December 4 on the offshore platform killed seven people and caused 23 others to be lost.
