18 dead as boat sinks off Turkey`s Bodrum

18 dead as boat sinks off Turkey`s Bodrum

18 people drowned when a boat carrying illegal migrants capsized off the Turkish resort town of Bodrum early Dec. 18.

APA reports quoting local media that 14 people were rescued. The survivors were taken to nearby hospitals. Their condition is serious. The migrants trying to reach the Greek island of Kos are citizens of Syria, Iraq and Pakistan. .

Shortly after this incident, the local police was informed that more 20 migrants were being illegally taken from Bodrum to Greece. Persons suspected of organizing the trip were detained. As it turned out, the organizers got $3,000 per capita, pledging to take them to Greece in an old boat.
