Earlier, Financial Times reported that just weeks before his death on Jan. 3, Colonel-General Igor Sergun, director of Russia’s Main Intelligence Directorate, was sent to Damascus upon Putin’s request to offer Assad to leave his office.
Assad refused to step down, according to the newspaper report.
