Prison riot breaks out in northwestern Turkish city
Inmates incarcerated at a closed E-type prison in northwestern province of Kocaeli started a prison riot on Thursday night, climbing the roof of the prison and setting their bed sheets on fire.

Riot police and firefighters were dispatched to the prison after the riot that broke out at the İzmit E-type closed prison. The prisoners initially prevented fire teams from intervening in the fire for some time. The fire was later contained. Some inmates unfurled Turkish flags at the roof of the prison. Prison authorities held talks with representatives of the prisoners to end the riot.

Speaking to the press in front of the prison, Kocaeli Chief Public Prosecutor Mustafa Küçük said the prison was taken under control again around midnight. He said the prisoners had some demands and that prison authorities listened to them.
