Fire breaks out at Latvijas Balzams distillery in Riga
A fire broke out at a storehouse of Latvijas Balazams distillery in Riga on Thursday morning, but firefighters managed to contain the flames, the local media reported citing a spokeswoman for the Latvian State Fire and Rescue Service.

Employees were evacuated from the burning building before the firefighters arrived.

Forty-seven firemen fought the blaze which destroyed a large amount of Latvijas Balzams products at the storehouse, fire department spokeswoman Viktorija Gribuste told Diena daily newspaper.

The accident started on the ground floor of the building where pallets with products caught fire, which then spread to the first floor of the building by way of a conveyor belt.

Nobody was harmed in the fire.

Latvijas Balzams representative Dana Hasana confirmed to Baltic News Service that the blaze started at the company`s storehouse, but said the exact cause was not yet clear.

"The causes of the fire have not been established. There are no victims and all people have been evacuated," Hasana said, adding that six fire engines worked at the site and reinforcements had been called as well.

According to information provided by the State Fire and Rescue Service, the flames spread to an area of 1,000 square meters of the Latvijas Balzams premises. The extent of the damage has yet to be determined.

Latvijas Balzams, established in 1900, is the largest producer of alcoholic beverages in the Baltics. The company, which makes more than 100 different beverages, is listed on the NASDAQ OMX Riga stock exchange. Enditem
