The FIFA`s Ethics Committee has launched a formal probe into the awarding of the 2006 FIFA World Cup to Germany, according to a statement issued on Tuesday.
"The chairman of the investigatory chamber, Dr Cornel Borbély, will lead the investigation proceedings as the chief of the investigation. He will examine all relevant evidence and hand over the case reports at the appropriate time, along with recommendations, to the adjudicatory chamber of the Ethics Committee," the statement reads.
According to the committee, the probe has been opened against the ex-presidents of the German Football Association (DFB), Wolfgang Niersbach and Theo Zwanziger, former secretary generals of the DFB Helmut Sandrock and Horst R. Schmidt, former vice president of the organization Franz Beckenbauer, and former chief financial officer of the DFB Stefan Hans.
The chamber will investigate their possible failure to report a breach of the FIFA Code of Ethics, in particular the code`s articles related to the "General rules of conduct," "Loyalty," "Duty of disclosure, cooperating and reporting" and "Conflicts of interest" and alleged undue payments and contracts to gain an advantage in the World Cup host selection which could constitute a breach of the code`s articles "Offering and accepting gifts and other benefits" and "Bribery and corruption."
