Azerbaijan recognizes independence of South Sudan
The Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of South Sudan signed an official document on the establishment of diplomatic relations.
AzVision.az reports quoting “AzerTAc” news agency that the document was signed by Ambassador Agshin Mehdiyev, Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to the UN, and Ambassador Francis Deng, Permanent Representative of South Sudan to the UN.

The people voted for the region’s independence in the referendum held in the South Sudan on 2011. Dissatisfied with this result, the united Sudan government wanted to solve this problem by military means, but it was failed and the world community recognized the independence of South Sudan. The separation of South Sudan, which has large oil deposits, dealt a serious blow to the economy of Sudan. According to the resolution adopted by the Sudan Parliament on April 16, South Sudan was declared as “enemy state”.

On May 2, the United Nations Security Council held its first meeting under the presidency of Azerbaijan. The UN Security Council adopted a resolution calling on Sudan and South Sudan with sanctions if the former civil war foes fail to halt an escalating conflict and resume talks within two weeks on a string of disputes over oil revenues and border demarcation. The 15-member panel unanimously approved the resolution initiated by the United States and adopted under the presidency of Azerbaijan.
