Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences elects new President
New President of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences has been elected.
Election was held at today’s annual meeting of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS).

ANAS acting president Akif Alizadeh was elected as a new president.

Head of the Presidential Administration Ramiz Mehdiyev also attended the meeting.

Akif Alizadeh was born on February 25, 1934. After finishing the school with a silver medal, he entered Azerbaijan Industrial Institute. He started working at the Institute of Geology of the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences in 1957. He defended dissertations for the Candidate of Science and successively doctoral Dissertation at 35. Alizadeh was one of the youngest highly qualified specialists in the USSR and the youngest director in the system of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.

Akif Alizadeh’s scientific interests cover problematic issues such as regional geology, the stratigraphy of Cretaceous period, the theory of mollusk fauna complex of Cretaceous period, paleobiogeography of the Mediterranean Sea in relation to the Cretaceous invertebrate fauna and the paths for restoration of general evolution of different groups of mollusks. In 1970s, the scientist, who realized the importance of implementation of physical and chemical methods in traditional paleontology and stratigraphy, conducted the first studies on the introduction of isotope geochemistry, proposed biogeochemical zoning of Cretaceous seas in the Caucasus and studied the geochemical conditions and the temperature of the ancient seas and paleobasins. He has been director of the Institute of Geology since 1976. He had been ANAS vice-president before was elected as ANAS president.

He is Honored Scientist and State Prize winner.

He was awarded with “Shohret” order in 2004 and “Sheref” in 2008.
