Regional problems complicate process of opening Turkish-Armenian border
Pope: "Regional problems complicate the process of opening the Turkish-Armenian border."
"Turkish leadership in the recent past, has taken an important step towards the Armenians, by sending them a letter of condolence in connection with the events of 1915 in the Ottoman Empire. Some thought this move is insufficient, but I think that regardless whether its much or less, the letter of Recep Tayyip Erdogan must be regarded as an outstretched hand. This is a positive step."

AzVision.az reports with reference to the Haberler.com that Pope Francis told this to journalists on board en route from Turkey to Italy.

"I personally, regardless of how far my hand outstretched, always waiting for a response from the interlocutor," the Pope said, noting that he appreciates the letter of Erdogan to the descendants of Armenians who migrated from the Ottoman Empire.

The head of the Roman Catholic Church drew attention to the fact of closing the border between Turkey and Armenia.

"I sincerely want this border to be opened. That would be fine. I know that in this region there are problems that do not facilitate the process of opening the borders, but I pray for the achievement of harmony between peoples."

"We need to improve the situation. I hope that 2015 will be a period of clearing the way for small gestures and steps towards rapprochement," the Pope said.
