Mortar explosion in Iran leaves people dead
Two people were killed in the result of mortar bomb explosion near the Sarpol-e Zahab city in Iran
The incident took place when the locals found an old mortar - remaining from the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988) in the ground - and started checking it, triggering the explosion.

The dead people were members of one family. Two more people got severely injured in the incident. The rescue forces were dispatched to the region and transferred the injured people to a hospital in Kermanshah city.

In the past several years similar incidents have repeatedly occurred in Iran, as people keep discovering unexploded old bombs and landmines.

The Iran-Iraq war lasted from 1980 to 1988 for supremacy over the strategically important strait between Iran and Iraq and the river Shatt al-Arab. The war ended in August 1988 as a result of a ceasefire. Each country has restored pre-war position.
