Earthquake Measuring 5.5 Occurs Off Russia
A 5.5-magnitude quake occurred Tuesday off the coast of Russia`s eastern Shikotan Island, which is part of the Kuril chain, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported.
According to USGS, the epicenter of the quake was located some 57 kilometers (35 miles) east of Shikotan’s coast at a depth of 69.3 kilometers.

No tsunami threat has been declared in connection with the earthquake.

The so-called Kuril-Kamchatka Arc, which extends some 2,100 km from Hokkaido, Japan along the Kuril Islands and the Pacific coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, is one of the most seismically active regions in the world.
