Council of Europe urges open dialogue with Russia

The Council of Europe is calling for continuing an “open dialogue” with Moscow, Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders, who chairs the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers said .

Reynders held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on Tuesday during which the sides discussed the activity of a Russian-Belgian commission and Belgian companies in Russia, and also the signing of conventions aimed at developing ties.

The diplomat said the Belgian side welcomed a convention on air traffic with Russia, as well as opening new air routes, including to St. Petersburg. “This will have a positive impact on rapprochement of our nations,” the minister said.

He also thanked Lavrov for Russia’s support of Belgium’s presidency in the Council of Europe and said the country will insist on monitoring prisons across Russia and Moscow’s ratification of a convention banning human trafficking.
