Over 40,000 detained in Turkey following military coup attempt
On July 15, the Turkish authorities said that an attempted coup was taking place in the country, which was suppressed the next day.
Ankara believes that US-based Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen and his supporters were seeking to overthrow the current government. The Fethullahist Terrorist Organization (FETO) is designated as a terrorist organization by Ankara.

"40,029 detained, 20,355 remanded following July 15 coup attempt," Yildirim said, as quoted by Anadolu news agency.

Gulen, who has been living in the US state of Pennsylvania since 1999, has denied the allegations and condemned the attempted coup.
