Iranian foreign minister made the remarks during a meeting with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Rybakov, who represents Russia in the P5+1 (five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany).
Zarif further called on Russia to involve itself more actively in achieving a comprehensive nuclear deal.
The Iranian FM also said that Iran and Russia should increase political conference in important regional and international developments. The sides also discussed the issue of boosting mutual ties in all fields.
Rybakov arrived in Tehran on Jan. 11 for bilateral talks with Iranian officials over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program.
Alongside with Zarif, the Russian top diplomat also met with Iranian deputy foreign ministers Abbas Araqchi and Majid Takht Ravanchi.
Talks between Iran and the P5+1 group have been extended until July 1, 2015 to reach a comprehensive nuclear agreement.
After the sides failed to meet the 24 Nov. 2014 deadline they also extended the Geneva nuclear deal, which was signed in November 2013 for providing Iran with some sanctions relief in exchange for Tehran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities.
A fresh round of nuclear talks between Iran and the six world powers is scheduled for Jan. 18 in Geneva, Switzerland.
Ahead of the talks with P5+1, Iran’s foreign minister will hold a meeting with the US Secretary of State John Kerry in Geneva on Jan. 14. The Iranian and American delegations will continue their bilateral negotiations in Geneva on Jan. 15-18.
Iran will also hold bilateral meetings with other members of the P5+1 before and after the talks.
