Gunmen kill one police officer in southeast Iran
One Iranian police officer was killed, and two other injured in an armed attack Jan. 21in the Khash district of the country
Commander of Sistan and Baluchestan province police, Brigadier General Hossein Rahimi said the police officers were dispatched to the city of Noukabad following a phone call reporting a car accident when the incident occurred, Iran ’s Fars news agency reported Jan. 21.

Unknown gunmen in a car shot at the police officers with automatic weapons, Rahimi said.

The incident is the third terror attack in the province in the past month.

In recent months, extremist groups have conducted several attacks against local police offices. The groups claim they`re fighting against the Iranian government for protection of Sunni residents of the province.

Four police officers were killed in two attacks in the city of Saravan October 8-9, 2014.

In mid-January Rahimi said that at least 18 members of a terrorist group involved in recent terror attacks in the province were detained.

“The terrorists were killing police officers and teachers in exchange for the money they received from foreign countries,” the commander said.

He said the terrorists were arrested in joint operations conducted by the police and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).

“They underwent military training for several months in Afghanistan and Pakistan. After receiving the money from a person working in an Arab country, they committed acts of terror in the region and wanted to create chaos,” Rahimi said.
