People living near the plant are afraid of reiteration of the same accident. Residents addressed complaint letters to the relevant bodies several times, noting the real danger of operation of the Metsamor NPP. Last year the letter was sent to the International Atomic Energy Agency of the United Nations. As the issue was not resolved, people made appeals to the international organizations again.
Probably, the Metsamor NPP can be devastated as a result of any earthquake. The station is also the source of ecological disaster. The toxic waste dumping from the station, Syunik region became almost completely useless. Some kind of chemicals posing threat to a human health have been revealed in foods, especially in potatoes that cultivated apart from the waste ponds, Armenian Zhokhovurd newspaper reads.
As a result of the researches made by the Ecological Studies Center of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences, mixed radioactive waste was found in waters. The citizens of the country require from the UN to take immediate action to stop the operation of nuclear power plant.
