Azerbaijani State Customs Committee clarifies statistics discrepancy with Georgia
The imports of cars from Georgia are not registered in the customs statistics of Azerbaijan, Head of the Department of Statistics and Information Technology of the Azerbaijani State Customs Committee Igbal Babayev told AzTv TV channel.
The goods imported into the country are registered in the statistics of the producing country, rather than in the statistics of the importing country, according to the Azerbaijani legislation.

"The vehicles in the amount of $93.9 million were imported from Georgia to Azerbaijan in 2014,” he said. “But according to Georgia’s statistics, this index was $269.8 million in the trade turnover with Azerbaijan. Only 34.8 percent of these goods are produced in Georgia. According to the Azerbaijani statistics, this is registered in the trade turnover data with this country. The rest cars are registered in the trade turnover with the producing countries.”

He said that for example, some cars imported from Georgia are produced in Germany. So they are registered in Germany’s trade turnover, rather than that of Georgia.

Babayev said that such a discrepancy in the customs statistics is observed in many countries worldwide.

"The difference in the statistic data on trade turnover between the US and China amounted to $ 48 billion in 2000, $ 72 billion – 2004, $84 billion in 2006," he said.

According to the Georgian Statistics Service, the trade turnover between Georgia and Azerbaijan amounted to $1.182 billion in 2014 (10.3 percent of total foreign trade of Georgia), which is 13 percent less than in 2013.

The share of cars in Georgia’s total exports to Azerbaijan amounted to 49.22 percent during this period.

The volume of exports of cars from Georgia decreased by 33.19 percent and in quantitative terms - by 133,110 cars compared to 2013.
