Monster fire creates huge smoke plume over Glasgow after series of explosions
A plume of smoke visible for miles around is towering over a British city after a series of explosions.
More than 20 firefighters are on the scene of the blaze in the Govan area of Glasgow, Scotland.

Reports suggest that a scrapyard in Helen Street, near Ibrox Stadium, has gone up in smoke. Large amounts of tyres and scrap metal are believed to be at the heart of the inferno.

Dramatic pictures posted on social media show the plume of smoke over the city. One man taking photos of the scene, Richard Smith, described “intermittent explosions”.

And on a YouTube video of the fire uploaded by Sardar Sadi, loud bangs were heard at the site. Rob Dunsmore shared a photo on Twitter allegedly showing the plume of smoke visible from 40 miles off.

There are also power outages affecting much of the area, which are expected to continue until 3am tomorrow. Twitter user Freya commented: “Most of Govan seems to have gone dark cos of this big Ibrox fire.”

Scotland’s Daily Record newspaper said 50 firefighters were on site in an update at 6.30pm. A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokeswoman earlier described 20 firefighters at the scene.

She said: "More than 20 firefighters are currently tackling a blaze at a Glasgow scrapyard."A total of four appliances and an aerial rescue pump have been mobilised to the city's Helen Street.

"Crews are working to contain the fire which has affected large quantities of tyres and a number of vehicles." Police Scotland are also on the scene and are working to divert drivers away from closed streets. No injuries have been reported.
